Kyoto University
Kyoto University was founded in 1897 and is located in Kyoto City, Japan’s historic center of art, culture, and learning. Since its foundation, the university has cultivated a distinctive academic tradition that emphasizes the value of free and open-minded dialogue and fosters a spirit of individuality and autonomy in its scholars. As a result, Kyoto University has produced 11 Nobel laureates, and its graduates often become influential figures in academia, politics, industry, and society.
With 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools, 12 research institutes, and numerous academic centers, Kyoto University stands as a major institution of higher learning. Additionally, the university has a strong international presence, with over 65 overseas offices and facilities, as well as 11 on-site laboratories worldwide.
Kyoto University's campuses benefit from rich cultural diversity, with students and staff representing over 100 different countries and regions. Of its 23,000 students, approximately 3,000 come from overseas.
Kyoto University European Center
The Kyoto University European Center in Heidelberg is one of the university’s overseas offices, established in 2014. It supports Kyoto University's research, education, and internationalization efforts in Europe while enhancing the university's global reputation. Serving as a vital point for nearly 80 European partner universities, the European Center acts as a bridge between Kyoto University and Europe. It offers students and researchers support by providing information, assistance, and programs to further their international mobility.
