Heidelberg University was founded more than 600 years ago (in 1386) and is the oldest university in Germany. Today, as in the past, Heidelberg is a leading institution for research and teaching in Europe. It has two medical faculties on separate campuses, one in Heidelberg and one in nearby Mannheim, both offering innovative courses of study. M.Sc. level courses specializing in health-related fields are offered in addition to clinical medical training. These programs aim to attract graduate students from various subjects with a view to forming interdisciplinary teams and fostering mutual learning. Medical research at the Medical Faculty Mannheim
The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University emphasizes the interconnectedness between and the excellence of its four foci, all of which extend from research to clinical application: oncology, vascular medicine, medical technology and translational neuroscience. The active participation of almost all clinics and institutes of the faculty in these areas reflects the strong interdisciplinary approach of our research. This is further strengthened through cooperation with the University of Mannheim, the University of Applied Sciences Mannheim, the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ), the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the Max-Planck-Institute (MPI) for Medical Research, the Central Institute for Mental Health, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation and our sister medical faculty in Heidelberg, to name only a few.
Network of cooperation
The international connectivity of the M.Sc. programme in Translational Medical Research, which forms part of the IMIM curriculum, links it with leading institutions in research, education and industry, a fact that contributes greatly to the development of a diverse, globally engaged medical research community. In 2014 the German Research Society (DFG)-funded International Research Training Group (RTG) “Hallmarks of Skin Cancer” was established between the Mannheim and Heidelberg Medical Faculties, DKFZ and partners in London, including King’s College, University of London and Cancer Research UK.
Prof. H. Augustin of the Medical Faculty and DKFZ is spokesperson of DFG-funded SFB/Transregio 23 "Vascular Differentiation and Remodeling".
Prof. H.-P. Hammes coordinates the DFG-funded RTG “Diabetic Microvascular Complications” established jointly with Groningen University in 2013.
Medical Faculty Mannheim is partnered with the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research, a member of the medical device research programme “Mannheim Molecular Intervention Environment“ (a winner of the federal funding competition “Research campus-public-private partnership for Innovation”), a beneficiary of Euro BioImaging, a research infrastructure project on the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures Roadmap.
